The Rhythm of New Beginnings

Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as Aluth Avurudu, is more than a celebration — it is a deeply rooted cultural ritual that marks the sun’s transition from Pisces to Aries, symbolizing renewal, prosperity, and harmony.

Unlike typical New Year celebrations, Avurudu follows auspicious times (nekath) — from lighting the hearth and preparing the first meal, to starting work and exchanging gifts. Each ritual is performed at a specific time, believed to bring good fortune for the year ahead.

Homes are filled with the aroma of traditional sweets like kavum, kokis, and aluwa, while families come together dressed in new clothes, strengthening bonds and honoring heritage.
