Bentota’s Historic Old Bridge Collapses — A Sad Day for a Beloved Landmark
The iconic Bentota Old Bridge, an engineering landmark built in 1902 by the British government under the guidance of engineer E.C. Davis, collapsed on November 27th, marking a deeply saddening moment for the Bentota community and all who cherished its historical presence.
Although the bridge had not been used for vehicular traffic since 2008 following the construction of a modern replacement, its graceful iron structure remained a beloved reminder of Bentota’s past. For generations, the bridge served as a vital link along the Galle–Colombo highway and stood as an unmistakable symbol of the riverside landscape.
Residents who admired the bridge for its cultural and historical value expressed sorrow at the news of its collapse. The structure had long represented a proud chapter of Bentota’s heritage, and its sudden fall has stirred heartfelt memories among locals and visitors alike.
At the same time, the community hopes that this moment will inspire renewed efforts to honor and preserve the bridge’s legacy. Many believe the collapse could open doors for restoration initiatives or the creation of a memorial structure that reflects the elegance and history of the original bridge, ensuring its story continues for future generations.

බෙන්තොටේ ඉතිහාසගත පැරණි පාලම කඩා වැටේ — ප්රදේශය සඳහා දුකුලන දවසක්
1902දී ඉංජිනේරු E.C. ඩේවිස්ගේ මඟපෙන්වීම යටතේ බ්රිතාන්ය ආණ්ඩුව විසින් ඉදි කළ බෙන්තොටේ ප්රකට පැරණි පාලම 2025 නොවැම්බර් 27 වන දින කඩා වැටීම, බෙන්තොට ප්රජාවටත් එය සෙනෙහසින් රකිමින් සිටි සියල්ලන්ටට්ත් මහා කනගාටුවක් තිළිණ කර උනූ මොහොතකි.
2008 දී නව පාලමක් භාවිතයට ගත් පසු මෙය වාහන සංචාරයට යොදා නැති වූවත්, එහි සුළුම සුලභ නොවන දාමය සහ සූන්දරත්වය, බෙන්තොටේ අතීතයේ සොදුරු රූපයක් ලෙස දශක ගණනාවක් ප්රදේශවාසීන්ගේ සිත් තුළ ජීවත්වුණි. ගාල්ල–කොළඹ මහාමාර්ගයේ වැදගත් සම්බන්ධකයක් ලෙස පරම්පරාවෙන් පරම්පරාවට මෙය බෙදාහදාගත් මතක අවිසිනි.

එහෙත්, බොහෝ දෙනා විශ්වාස කරන්නේ මෙම සිදුවීම, පාලමගේ උතුම් වටිනාකම ගෞරවයෙන් සුරකිමින් එහි උරුමය නව ආකාරයකින් ජීවත් කිරීමට අවස්ථාවක් බවයි. ප්රදේශය නව සංරක්ෂණ මූලික සංකල්ප, මතක පූර්වක සංකේත, හෝ මුල් පාලමගේ රූපලාවන්යය මත පදනම් වූ නව නිර්මාණයක් සඳහා දොරගුල්ලක් විවෘත වී ඇති බව ඔවුන් විශ්වාස කරති.
මෙය දුක් ඇති කළ දවසක් වුවත්, බෙන්තොටේ ජනතාව එකඟ වී සිටී සියවසකට වැඩි කාලයක් බෙන්තොටේ හැඩ ගැන්වූ මෙම අසීමිත සම්පත ගෞරවයෙන් මතකයේ සුරැකීමටත්, එහි උරුමය අනාගත පරම්පරාවට සනිටුහන් කර නැවත ජීවත් කිරීමටත්.
