In picturesque villages across Sri Lanka, nestled amidst lush green fields and rolling hills, our Sustainable Farming Programme was initiated to help small-scale farmers improve their livelihoods and embrace modern agricultural practices. The story of this transformative initiative began with John Keells Foundation in collaboration with Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts.
Recognizing the importance of sustainable agriculture and its potential to uplift rural communities, we collectively set out to create a holistic programme that could address the pressing issues faced by these farmers. The main objectives were to promote sustainable farming practices, enhance agricultural productivity, and ensure environmental conservation.
This commenced at the end of 2022 by organizing training sessions to educate farmers about the latest sustainable agricultural practices and equipped them with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) techniques named as poly mulching, insect-proof nets, drip, and sprinkler irrigation systems.
27 farmlands continue to be in operation on 19 acres of land around our properties - in Beruwala, Kandy, Habarana, Trincomalee, and Weerawila, with over 90 persons having directly benefitted.
The impact of the initiative thus far, not only transformed the lives of small-scale farmers but also became a shining example of how sustainable agriculture can address food security, environmental concerns, and rural development.
It also serves as a testament that with the right knowledge, support, and community involvement, even small-scale farmers can be agents of positive change for a brighter and greener future.
