Sri Lanka is one of the most important centers of Theravāda Buddhism in the world. Buddhism has shaped the island’s culture, art, language, festivals, ethics, architecture, and daily life for more than 2,000 years.
The core teachings of Gautama Buddha in the Theravāda tradition focus on understanding suffering, developing wisdom, and reaching liberation (Nibbāna/Nirvana). Theravāda Buddhism is based mainly on the Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka) and preserves what is considered the earliest recorded teachings of the Buddha.
The Four Noble Truths - These are the foundation of Buddhist teaching.
1. Dukkha — The Truth of Suffering
Life includes suffering, dissatisfaction, stress, aging, sickness, death, separation, and emotional pain.
2. Samudaya — The Cause of Suffering
Suffering arises from craving (taṇhā), attachment, and ignorance.
3. Nirodha — The End of Suffering
Freedom from suffering is possible through ending craving and ignorance. This state is called Nibbāna.
4. Marga — The Path Leading to the End of Suffering
