Discovery : Riverston | Matale

Riverston is another peak in Sri Lanka's Knuckles mountain range, situated near Matale in the Central Province. The Riverston Peak has an elevation of 1,424 meters and is a popular hiking destination, however it is poorly known by outsiders. This peak boasts spectacular views and is located near Pitawala Pathana Mini World's End.

The Riverston Peak is located around 30 kilometers from Matale on the Matale-Hettipola Road via Illukkumbura. The trek to Riverston Peak begins on the Matale hettipole road, 27 kilometers from Matale. From the base, there is a well-paved uphill road to the left that leads to the Riverston Towers.

Riverston's weather conditions are more acceptable than those of other mountain summits in the Knuckles Mountain Range since it is closer to the dry zone. However, during the rainy season and cold months, the wind and mist cover the entire area, making it incredibly cold. The Riverstone Gap, in particular, features strong winds that make you feel as if you're being blown away.

The trek to the summit would be around 2 kilometers long. The trail leading to the peak is generally windy. To get the whole experience, climb Riverstone SLT Tower Mountain. Everyone comes to experience the 'wind'. The ascent is on a paved road, so you won't require hiking gear or shoes. You can take a stroll in slippers. If you're fit, it'll only take about 15-20 minutes. If not, it will take no longer than 30-45 minutes. There are some shortcuts through the forest, but it is best to take the concrete route.
