International Leopard Day May 03, 2026

International Leopard Day occurs on May 3rd. Leopards are elusive and nocturnal animals whose size and color depend on the habitat. They are great climbers and hide in trees, where they hide their prey to avoid competition. Members of the cat family, leopards live in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Russia, and the Indian subcontinent.

Why should we protect Sri Lankan Leopard??

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is vital as the island's apex predator, maintaining ecological balance by controlling prey populations. As an endangered endemic subspecies (less than 1,000 left), they are crucial for biodiversity, habitat health, and eco-tourism revenue, particularly in parks like Yala which have high density.

Without natural predators like lions or tigers on the island, the leopard is the sole top predator. They control populations of prey species like spotted deer and wild boar. As a keystone species, the health of the leopard population represents the health of the entire ecosystem. Protecting them protects their habitats, including dry zone forests and highland wilderness. Sri Lanka is a prime location for leopard sightings, this draws international tourism, supporting local livelihoods and raising awareness for conservation.

The Panthera pardus kotiya is found only in Sri Lanka, making its preservation a critical part of the country's national biodiversity heritage.
