This is our favourite part of the job.

Not the bookings, not the photos, this. Guests who came up for two nights and left saying they'd already started planning the next trip before they'd reached the bottom of the hill.

Too Good for Ordinary People.

It sounds like a line from a luxury campaign. It’s actually what the tea trade calls Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (the highest quality of tea). A grade so refined, the name almost had to come with a sense of humour.

A factory could do it in twenty minutes. But some things were never meant to be rushed.

Rare by nature. Refined by hand.

Some places in the hill country have become a photograph you queue for. Haldummulla is still a place you wake up in.

Here's the actual day. Birds wake you at 5.45. Tea outside while the cloud's still in the valley. In the morning you pick tea beside women who've done it for years. By mid-morning you're watching what you picked turn from green to copper, then you walk through Pekoe Trail 12.

Dark at six. Fire by quarter past.
