A jewel of the forest, Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca), the smallest kingfisher in Sri Lanka, and one of the smallest and most colourful in all of Asia.
Found in Sri Lanka’s shaded forest streams upto lower hill forests, and distributed across the Indian subcontinent, the Western Ghats, and Southeast Asia.
This shy little bird flashes brilliant blues, purples, and orange as it darts through dense undergrowth, often making it difficult glimpse it in flight. An uncommon resident, it feeds on insects, small frogs, and other tiny forest creatures, nesting in tunnels dug into stream banks.
This rare glimpses of this magical bird come from our recent birding tours, guided by our own expert tour leaders. Join us, the Bird and Wildlife Team, for a chance to find this magnificent bird in the wild.
