Finally, a word about Muslims in Jaffna. According to statistics, among the population of the Jaffna district, 1.2% were Muslims in 1946 and 1.66% in 1981.
These Muslims are descendants of Arab traders who had married Tamil women. Though they speak Tamil and use many Tamil customs and habits, they, in the words of a scholar, “have been keen to disown their Tamil heritage and establish their separate identity”.
One interesting feature regarding the Jaffna Muslims is that 90% of tailors of Jaffna town are Muslims,” a phenomenon not found anywhere else in Sri Lanka”.
