Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot
The Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, scientifically known as _Loriculus beryllinus_, is a small, brightly colored parrot endemic to Sri Lanka. The genus Loriculus includes hanging parrots known for their acrobatic roosting behavior, often sleeping upside down like bats. The species name beryllinus refers to its vivid green plumage, reminiscent of the green beryl gemstone. Adapted to forest habitats, this parrot plays a role in seed dispersal and pollination. Its short, rounded wings and tail reflect an adaptation for agile flight in dense foliage. As an island endemic, its evolution has been shaped by geographic isolation, leading to unique characteristics distinct from its mainland relatives.
It is called “ගිරාමලිත්තා Giramaliththa” in Sinhala language and “இலங்கை தொங்கும் கிளி "Illankai Thongum Kilzhi" in Tamil language.
