Today is Full Moon Poya Day 🌝🙏🏻

Every full moon (usually one a month) is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Each of the full moons has its own name and they are days to commemorate key events in Buddhism.
Today is Madin Full Moon Poya.
This poya day is usually celebrated on the first full moon in March and is commemorating the Buddha’s first visit to his hometown after attaining enlightenment.

Every full moon day is known as a Poya in the Sinhala language; this is when a practicing Sinhalese Buddhist visits a temple for religious observances. There are 13 or 14 Poyas per year. The term poya is derived from the Pali and Sanskrit work uposatha (from upa + vas “to fast”), primarily signifying “fast day”. Generally shops and businesses are closed on Poya days, and the sale of alcohol and meat is forbidden.

Be still and know 🙏🏻

The Avukana or Aukana statue is a tall standing statue of the Buddha near Kekirawa in North Central Sri Lanka. The statue, which has a height of more than 12 meters, was carved out of a large granite rock face during the 5th century. It depicts a variation of the Abhaya mudra, and the closely worn robe is elaborately carved. Constructed during the reign of Dhatusena, it may have been made as a result of a competition between a master and a pupil. The Avukana statue is one of the best examples of a standing statue constructed in ancient Sri Lanka. Have you seen it with your own eyes?

In January, SriLankan Pearl was for four days at Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht, The Netherlands, with three of us at our stall each day. It was a pleasure and an inspiration to meet so many people who are dreaming about travelling to Sri Lanka this year and next: listening to their ideas, answering questions, and exploring together what a tailor-made journey could look like.

Of course, numbers are easy to mention, as around 200 brochures were taken. But what stayed with us were the moments behind the numbers.
People didn’t just walk past our stand. They stopped. They looked at the map with us, asked thoughtful questions, and often stayed for real conversations about their plans and expectations. More than once, others were waiting patiently in line for their turn to talk. Those real conversations, unhurried and personal, are what we value most.

What made it extra special was that several former clients came to visit us at the stand, simply to say hello and share how they look back on their journey through Sri Lanka. Moments like that mean a great deal to us. Many of our travellers find us through recommendations, returning guests, and the wonderful reviews our clients leave, and meeting some of them again in person was truly rewarding. Because a tailor-made journey is never just a product. It starts with listening, understanding, and taking the time to explore what Sri Lanka could mean for someone personally. That is exactly how we work every day: small-scale, personal, and with genuine attention, whether we are planning an itinerary or standing at a busy travel fair.

In these weeks after the fair, we are following up with the inquiries we received. We have had some follow-up calls and video meetings, and several tours have now been confirmed. A beautiful result of conversations that started at a map, at a busy stall in Utrecht.

We look forward to seeing many more of these first meetings grow into unforgettable journeys 🌴 🇱🇰
