George Gardener as superintendent made this garden more independent and expanded it beyond its boundaries in 1844. H was followed by George Thwaits, and then Henry Trimen following his death. In 1912 the garden was established and taken under the administration of the Department of Agriculture. The Botanic Garden was used as the headquarters of the South East Asia Command by Lord Louis Mountbatten, the supreme commander ofthe allied forces in South Asia during the era of World WarII. Even after the capture of the Kandy Kingdom, the British, who realized the importance of the Tooth relic to the local citizenry, did their best to safeguard it and provide it with necessary overhauls. The doors of the Weda Hitana Maligawa are carved in ivory which are quite magnificent. The actual chamber which secures the tooth relic is known as the “Handun Kunama”The golden canopy over the main shrine, built in 1987 by Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa and the golden fence which encircles the main shrine are other notable features. The tooth relic is encased in seven golden caskets in the shape of a stupa and engraved with precious gemstones. The procession casket which is used during the Kandy Esala Procession is also displayed in this chamber. The storied structure to the right and left of the mainshrineinthelowerhal contain the residence quarters of the monks engaged during daily service (Thevava), the conference hall, the library and the office of the Diyawadana Nilame. Kandy has been declared a world heritage site by the UNESCO due to recognition owned by the Temple of the Tooth relic. Ven Monks of “Bhikkus”ofthe two chapters of Malwatu and Asgiriya conduct daily worships in the inner chamber of the temple. Rituals are performed 3 times daily at dawn, at noon and in the evening. On Wednesdays there is a symbolic bathing of the sacred relic with an herbal preparation from scented water and fragrant flowers. At the end of the square you may find a stone pillar memorial which contains the skull and remains of Keppetipola Disawe, a national Sinhalese hero who was one of the many prominentfigures that initiated the Uva rebellion of 1818 against the British, a statue of Madduma Bandara and those of Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha.
The Magul Maduwa or the Royal Audience Hall is where the king used to meet his ministers and carry out administrative work. This finely carved wooden building is also known as the Royal Court. The Magul Maduwa is used asa place public exhibitions. Thetooth relic was often exhibited here for public veneration and it was here that the king had received Ambassadors from foreign countries. The Kandyan convention between the British and the Kandyan chieftains was signed here on the 5th of March 1815 after the fall of the Kandy Kingdom. It’ s once again an elegant piece of architecture admired by many. The Wadahindina Mandappe situated near the Raja wasala and magul maduwa is the place the king used to rest while the visitors were to come to meet him. Foreign visitors especially were able to meet the king in this palace. It is used as the Raja Tuskers Museum today. It is here that the remains of Rajah, the chief elephant of the Kandy Esala Procession for several years are kept. The building is to the north of the temple but in the same compound. The P***e Vahale or the Lower Palace, constructed during the reign of King SriVikrama Rajasinha was used as the quarters of the harem of the King of Kandy. It was converted into a Museum in 1942 and up to date serves as the National Museum ofKandy maintained by the Department of National Museums. This is a place you need to consider visiting since it has many things to be seen and worth seeing. It’ ll be any history lovers’favourite spot. To the north ofthe museum we find the Meda wasala or the queens’chambers. It’ used as the National Department of Archaeology. s nowbeing The Ran Ayudu Maduwaor the RoyalArmoury is also a place worth visiting. It’ s currently used for the District Courts of Kandy. The Ulpange or the Queens’Bathing pavilion is located onthe embankment of the Kandy lake. It was constructed by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe to serve as the bathing chambers of his queens.Itwasawel-organized complex. The building was later altered by the British and was converted into a library. The Kandy Esala Perahara is also a significant eventoriented around the Temple of the tooth, which is considered one of the most beautiful pageants in Asia. It’ saprocessionheldannualy in July to honour the sacred tooth relic and the four ‘ guardian’Gods Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Goddess Pattini. Its main purpose is to beseech blessings of the gods to obtain rain for the cultivation of crops and to enrich the lands of the kingdom and it is thought to date back to the 3d century BC.This ritual is performed by carrying the sacred tooth relic of Buddha through the streets of the Kandy city.
