Here’s what I found out about the Bogoda Wooden Bridge near Badulla, Sri Lanka — a fascinating heritage site:

🏛 Basic Facts

The Bogoda Wooden Bridge is located about 7 km west of Badulla city.

It spans the Gallanda Oya river.

It is adjacent to the Bogoda Raja Maha Vihara (temple).

🏗 Architecture & Construction

The bridge was built in the 16th century, during the Dambadeniya era.

It is entirely made of wood, including wooden nails (i.e. no metal nails used).

The materials include logs of Jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), Kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), Kaluwara (Diospyros ebenum), and Milla wood for decorative pieces.

📏 Dimensions & Structure

Length: about 50 feet (~15 meters)

Width/breadth: approximately 6 feet (~1.5 to 1.8 meters)

Height of the roofed portion: around 8 feet (~2.4 meters) from the planks to the roof top.

It’s supported by large logs and pillars, and some sources say it stands on a large tree trunk/pole of height ~35 ft (≈11 m).

🌿 Cultural & Historical Significance

It appears on the route that connected Badulla and Kandy in ancient times.

It also served as an Ambalama (a rest place for travelers/pilgrims) besides being a bridge.

The temple nearby (Bogoda Raja Maha Vihara) is even older, with roots going back to the 1st century BCE (some cave temple elements).

⚠ Current Condition & Access

The bridge has undergone some renovation/restoration by the Department of Archaeology.

It is still in use, especially by locals and pilgrims.

Access: You can reach it from Hali-Ela town on the Bandarawela-Badulla road, turning off at signboards pointing to Bogoda.

Yala National Park is the most renowned wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka. It is situated in the southeastern part of the island, spanning both Hambantota and Monaragala districts. The park is famous for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, making it an ideal location for leopard sightings.
Yala is also inhabited by elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild buffalo, deer, monkeys, and numerous bird species. The park’s landscape comprises dry forests, grasslands, lagoons, and coastal areas, creating a stunning and diverse environment.

Inside, you’ll find decorative brass work, vivid murals, pillared halls, a stepped holy pool, and shrines to Murugan, Ganesh, Vairavar, Sun, and Sandana Gopala .

🙏 Religious & Cultural Significance

The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan (also called Skanda, Kandaswamy), represented by his spear (the “vel”) at the sanctum .

It stands as the largest and most important Hindu shrine in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province and a spiritual focal point for both local and diaspora Tamil communities .

The annual Nallur Festival, held in July–August, lasts around 25–28 days, featuring flag-hoisting, chariot processions, daily pujas, and devotees performing body-piercing acts as expressions of faith .

🔍 Visiting & Practical Tips

Dress modestly: Men—bare-chested with pants or sarongs; Women—shoulders and legs covered, no tight or revealing clothing .

Remove footwear and ritually cleanse at the temple entrance well before entering .

Offerings such as flowers, fruits, camphor, and incense are welcome and can be purchased opposite the temple .

Opening hours are typically early morning (4:30 am), late morning, and late afternoon to evening; check locally for current timings .❤️🙏🙏🙏
