Horton Plains leopards aren’t like the ones you see in Yala or Wilpattu—they live high above the clouds in the chilly cloud forests and open grasslands of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. These powerful predators have adapted to the cold with thicker fur and a stealthy lifestyle. They’re strong enough to hunt large sambar deers, yet skilled enough to catch smaller prey like birds and hares. With fewer people and less disturbance, they are sometimes even seen during the day. Spotting one is rare—but unforgettable.

This World Environment Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the power we hold — to protect, to preserve, and to restore the natural world. From the depths of our oceans to the peaks of icy mountains, every environment plays a vital role in sustaining life.

It’s not just about the planet. It’s about every species, every breath, every future. Let’s not wait for a better world. Let’s create it—one action at a time.

Spotted in the open grasslands of Wilpattu National Park, this powerful herbivore is one of the largest and most endangered wild bovines in the world. With its broad, backward-sweeping horns and muscular frame, the wild buffalo plays a vital role in Sri Lanka’s wetland ecosystems. These animals are known to wallow in muddy pools to regulate body temperature and fend off parasites — a behavior crucial for their survival in tropical climates. Unfortunately, their numbers are declining due to habitat loss, hybridization with domestic buffalo, and human-wildlife conflict. Today, they are listed as Endangered by the IUCN.

Let’s raise awareness and preserve these majestic icons of the wild, so future generations can witness their strength and grace in the wild plains of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan cobra (Naja naja), is one of the most iconic and recognizable venomous snakes found across Sri Lanka. Frequently spotted in national parks like Wilpattu, as well as in forests, dry zones, and even rural settlements, this majestic reptile is both feared and respected. Known for its striking hood display and defensive posture, the cobra is not naturally aggressive—it prefers to avoid conflict and will only strike if provoked or cornered. Feeding mainly on rodents, frogs, and small reptiles, it plays a crucial ecological role in controlling pest populations. Its venom is neurotoxic, affecting the nervous system, which makes it dangerous, but bites are rare with proper awareness and avoidance. Despite its reputation, the Sri Lankan cobra is a vital part of the island’s biodiversity—an elegant reminder of nature’s delicate balance and power.

We were privileged to host renowned American wildlife photographer Jeff Parker for an unforgettable photographic safari deep in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Wilpattu National Park. What unfolded during his journey was nothing short of extraordinary.
Jeff bore witness to one of nature’s most dramatic moments — a leopard hunt and successful takedown of a spotted deer, a rare sight even for the most seasoned wildlife observers. But nature had more in store. Later, in a moment of sheer magic, a mother leopard calmly nursed her cubs — not hidden away in the thickets, but right in the middle of the road, allowing Jeff to capture once-in-a-lifetime shots.

These sightings weren’t just a matter of luck — they were made possible by the deep expertise of our Classic Wild team. From the sharp eyes and instincts of our naturalist guides to the precision and intuition of our safari drivers, every element was orchestrated to perfection. Our handpicked guides and drivers are more than just experts — they are storytellers of the wild, trained to anticipate, position, and respond to the ever-changing rhythm of the jungle, ensuring photographers never miss a moment.

Classic Wild takes pride in crafting experiences that meet the demanding expectations of professionals like Jeff — blending fieldcraft, vehicle maneuverability, and a deep understanding of animal behavior to offer unparalleled photographic opportunities.

We are honored to continue this journey with Jeff and look forward to welcoming him and his photography group back next year — and for many wild adventures to come.

Did You Know?
The Black-capped Bulbul (Rubigula melanictera) is a bright burst of yellow in Sri Lanka’s forests — and you won’t find it anywhere else in the world! That’s right, this beauty is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it evolved here and never left. Its unique range is thanks to the island’s rich biodiversity and isolated ecosystems. You can spot these charming songbirds flitting through lowland rainforests, wet zone home gardens, and spice plantations, especially in places like Sinharaja, Kitulgala, and the southwestern hills.
With their melodious calls and striking black cap, they’re a true hidden gem of Sri Lanka’s wildlife.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we reflect on the deep connection between nature and human progress.

The 2025 theme, “Harmony with nature and sustainable development”, reminds us that safeguarding biodiversity is key to securing clean air, fresh water, climate stability, food security, and more.

True development is only possible when nature thrives with us.

Let’s build a future where every species has a place, and every ecosystem a voice.

Endangered Species Day is a reminder that even the smallest voices in nature deserve to be heard, and protected.

Today the spotlight is on the Cheeky Shrub Frog (Pseudophilautus procax), a tiny yet critically endangered amphibian endemic to Sri Lanka. Found in montane cloud forests at higher elevations, it depends on moist, shady habitats and has a unique development process—hatching directly as miniature adults.

Sadly, because of its narrow habitat range and specific ecological needs, it is highly vulnerable to environmental changes. Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, Pseudophilautus procax faces severe threats from habitat loss due to deforestation, agricultural expansion, and human settlement. Conservation efforts are critical to preserving its remaining forest habitats and preventing extinction.
