📍 Buduruwagala, Wellawaya.

Discover Buduruwagala — one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable ancient rock-carving sites, hidden amidst the tranquil landscapes of the Uva Province. Famous for its towering Buddha statue carved directly into a granite cliff, this sacred site showcases the artistic and spiritual brilliance of a bygone era. Standing at nearly 51 feet (15.5 meters), the central Buddha figure is the tallest ancient standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, inspiring awe among visitors and pilgrims alike.

Dating back to around the 9th–10th centuries CE, Buduruwagala was an important Mahayana Buddhist center. The site features seven magnificent figures carved into the rock face, including bodhisattvas and attendants, reflecting a unique blend of religious devotion and craftsmanship. Surrounded by peaceful forests and an atmosphere of serenity, Buduruwagala offers a fascinating journey into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. ✨
