Discovering the Wonders of Maharashtra: To the City of Daulatabad...
The Astonishing Buddhist Creations Carved with Chisel and Hammer – Part 02
Ajanta

Last week, through our 'Sanchare - සංචාරේ' (Travels) column, we journeyed to the renowned 'Ellora' cave temple complex in the Maharashtra state of India. This was to discuss information gathered during our visit to Maharashtra, undertaken in March upon the invitation of the Directorate of Tourism of the Government of Maharashtra, as part of the 'Divaina' 'Green-Travels' initiative.

After touring Mumbai, Nagpur, and Tadoba, we arrived in 'Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar', formerly known as the city of 'Daulatabad'. From our hotel, we set out one morning to explore the Ellora cave complex, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. We were there to witness the wonder of this cave temple complex, believed to have been carved deep into solid rock between 600 and 1000 AD during the reign of the Rashtrakuta kings.

Consisting of 34 caves, caves 1–12 represent a Buddhist monastic complex, caves 13–29 are a Hindu temple complex, and caves 30–34 are associated with the Jain religion. The miracle here is that a mountain was "carved with chisels and hammers" from top to bottom and deep inside, creating rock-cut buildings, carvings, walls, pillars, ceilings, and statues directly from the existing stone. There is no brick or concrete to be found, and it is estimated that over 500,000 tons of rock were cut and removed. While we mentioned this last week, we wanted to revisit it because our previous focus was primarily on the Hindu Kailasa Temple, without delving much into the Buddhist monasteries.

Indeed, this stone-carved religious complex, which showcases the true creative power of the ancient stone carver, gives a special place to the Buddhist monastery complex. Today, we present a collection of selected photographs to convey the uniqueness, artistry, and marvel of these creations. During our Ellora tour, time permitting, we were able to visit several Buddhist caves, specifically caves 10 and 12.

It is believed that the Ellora Buddhist cave complex—which feels like a replica of the famous 'Ajanta'—was built with Ajanta as its guide. This is because Ajanta is a Buddhist monastic complex created in two phases, from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD, while Ellora was built between the 7th and 11th centuries AD—at least 100 years after the completion of Ajanta. Interestingly, the murals of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka, the most important archaeological site with paintings similar to Ajanta, are also believed to have been painted in the 5th century AD, making the era of Ellora comparable to that of Sigiriya.

After visiting Ellora, we dedicated the following day to visiting 'Ajanta'. Having come all this way to Maharashtra, we could not leave without seeing this Buddhist archaeological monument. It would be unthinkable for any Sri Lankan traveling to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar not to experience such a miraculous creation. The distance from our hotel to Ajanta was approximately 104 kilometers (100 km from Ellora). For travelers arriving by train, the most convenient route is to travel 59 kilometers by road from the 'Jalgaon' railway station, located on the Central Line that runs from New Delhi to Mumbai or Allahabad to Mumbai.

This journey was made possible under the guidance of Dr. Subhash Jadhav and the Directorate of Maharashtra Tourism, with travel arrangements provided by Thomas Cook India. It was a great strength to have my fellow team members with me: fellow journalist Sanath Weerasuriya (Sunday Times), and travel agency managers Ranjith Lowe (Travel Sensate, Wennappuwa), Niloo Wijetunga (Direct Travels, Kurunegala), Samith Lowe (Director, 2nd Chance, Wennappuwa), and Amil Gamage (Managing Director, Travel Quest, Kollupitiya). I must remember to mention that Niluka Wijetunga provided immense support in capturing additional photographs of Ellora and Ajanta for our 'Sanchare' feature. We all traveled to India upon the invitation of the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka and the Directorate of Maharashtra Tourism.

We left early in the morning and reached the 'Ajanta View Point' around 9:00 AM. First, we enjoyed the aerial view of the horse-shoe-shaped Ajanta cave complex nestled in the valley below and learned about the surrounding landscape and geography from Dr. Subhash Jadhav. He served as an excellent guide, explaining all the details of Ajanta with great clarity to our group, who traveled in three buses. However, there was no agreement among our group regarding his mention that Emperor Ashoka had conquered many countries in the region, including Sri Lanka. In reality, that was not the case; the Sri Lankan ruler of that time, King Devanampiya Tissa, is considered a contemporary friend of Emperor Ashoka.

After spending about half an hour at the viewpoint taking photos and gathering information, we headed towards the Ajanta site to explore its interior, taking in the beauty of the Waghora River that flows around the horse-shoe-shaped cliffs. As we visited during the dry season, the environment was parched, and the river was reduced to small pools. We learned that during the rainy season, the river becomes active, and waterfalls cascade beautifully from the upper slopes.

In less than half an hour, we reached the entrance to the archaeological complex. By then, a large number of travelers, including Sri Lankans and foreign Buddhist monks, had already arrived. After purchasing tickets, we entered the complex under the scorching sun. From that moment on, we were able to experience the man-made marvels within the natural caves of this priceless archaeological site, which we had been looking forward to for so long. We tried to understand even a small chapter of this Buddhist artistic treasure, which spans over 200 years of history. Truly, our 'Sanchare' team felt that one would need at least a week to fully immerse themselves in it.

Of the 30 caves in Ajanta, 27 are the most prominent, some of which are two-storied. As mentioned, the complex was built over nearly 200 years in two phases: the first phase (2nd century BC – 1st century BC), the Hinayana period, features simple caves (like 9 and 10) with only stupas and no Buddha statues. The second phase (5th–6th century AD) belongs to the Mahayana tradition, characterized by the inclusion of Buddha statues with royal patronage. 24 caves were completed during this time, particularly under the Vakataka kings, with the peak of construction occurring during the reign of King Harisena. There are two types of caves: prayer halls and dwelling caves for meditating monks. The viharas contain the famous Ajanta stone carvings and paintings.

The wonder we experienced walking through those 27 caves cannot be described in words. We have only shared the highlights of our visit. While there is much more to say, this space is insufficient.
