✴️වස්ගමුව ජාතික වනෝද්‍යානය ගැන

වස්ගමුව ජාතික උද්‍යානය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජාතික උද්‍යාන අතරින් සුවිශේෂ ලක්ෂණයන්ගෙන් හෙබි වන පෙතකි.

මහවැලි, අඹන් සහ කළු යන ගංගා වලින් ද, දුනි විල ඔයෙන් ද වට වූ වස්ගමුව ජාතික උද්‍යානය මාතලේ සහ පොළොන්නරුව යන දිස්ත්‍රික්කයන් තුළ පිහිටා ඇත.

වර්තමාන ජාතික උද්‍යානයට අයත් භුමිය දැඩි ස්වභාව රක්ෂිතයක් ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත්වුයේ 1938 වර්ෂයේ දී ය. මෙම රක්ෂිතයට යාබදව වස්ගමුව අන්තර් කලාපය 1945 වර්ෂයේදී ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කෙරිණි. කඩිනම් මහවැලි සංවර්ධන ව්‍යාපෘතිය ආරම්භ වීම හේතුවෙන් වනාන්තර එළි පෙහෙළි වීම නිසා වාසස්ථාන අහිමි වු වන සතුන් ද මෙම රමණීය බිම් පෙදෙසට සීමා වන්නට විය. එබැවින් මෙම රක්ෂිත ප්‍රදේශ දෙකම හා අතිරේකව තවත් භුමි ප්‍රදේශයක් ද එකතුව එහි ජෛව විවිධත්වය වඩාත් සංරක්ෂණය කිරීමේ අරමුණින් 1984 වර්ෂයේ අගෝස්තු මස 07 වන දින වස්ගමුව ජාතික උද්‍යානයක් ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලදී.

මධ්‍යම සහ උතුරු මැද පලාත් ආශ්‍රිතව පිහිටි ජාතික උදාන අතරින් වල් අලින් නැරඹිය හැකි එකම ජාතික උද්‍යානය වන වස්ගමුව ජාතික උද්‍යානය හෙක්ටයාර 37,062.9 කි.

✴️About Wasgamuwa National Park ( Part 01 )

Wasgamuwa is well known for its abundant wildlife populations, wilderness setting and the home of several interesting ancient sites. Bounded on three sides by rivers it is very diverse with open grasslands, closed forests, scrub jungle, riverine forests, rocky ridges and small tanks. Its location to the east of the Knuckles range provides for a very scenic park.

Wasgamuwa is distinguished from other parks by having a full complement of predators of which bears are particularly noteworthy. Ecological research undertaken in the park suggests that the density of bears in Wasgamuwa is probably higher than anywhere else in Sri Lanka. The name "Wasgamuwa" may also derive from an ancient meaning as a gathering place for bears.

Part of Wasgamuwa was declared a Strict Nature Reserve in 1938 and additional areas added to become Wasgamuwa National Park on 07th August 1984. The park covers almost 37,062.9 hectares of which most is wilderness areas with no visitation.
