UNESCO World Heritage Site - Sacred City of Anuradhapura
Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, the ancient city of Anuradhapura is one of the most historically important places on the island. It served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over a millennium from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. Anuradhapura was the political and religious center of Sri Lanka for centuries. It was a thriving center of Buddhism, trade and culture and the ancient city of Anuradhapura stands as a testament to Sri Lanka's ancient civilization and its enduring Buddhist heritage. Anuradhapura was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 in recognition of its cultural importance.
Even today Anuradhapura is a major sacred place for all Buddhists around the world. And also is dotted with impressive stupas (dagobas) monasteries, and monuments. The ancient city is home to numerous archaeological sites, including palaces, temples, monasteries, and ceremonial platforms.
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Is a sacred Bo tree that stands in the Mahamewna Gardens in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. This makes it one of the oldest documented trees in the world with a known planting date, around 288 BCE.
The most famous being the Ruwanwelisaya, Samadhi Buddha, Moonstone, Gurdstone, Jetavanaramaya, Thuparamaya, Lankaramaya, Isurumuniya Temple and Abhayagiri Dagaba. These stupas were constructed to enshrine relics of the Buddha and are architectural marvels, showcasing the advanced engineering and craftsmanship of ancient Sri Lankan civilization.
Anuradhapura features a sophisticated irrigation system with several large reservoirs (tanks) such as the Basawakkulama, Tissa Wewa and Abhaya Wewa, which were built to supply water for agriculture and domestic use. These reservoirs are not only functional but also serve as scenic attractions.
Also the Twin Pond and the Elephant Pond along with the old temples reflect the meticulous engineering and architecture of the ancient Sinhalese.
The city of Anuradhapura attracts all visitors from all over the world who come to explore its rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance.
