The mystical temple town of Kataragama has been a centre of worship and pilgrimage for over 2000 years, significant for Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians alike. Hindus worship at the Katirkamam Temple, dedicated to Murugan, and bathe in the Manika river. Buddhist pilgrims make for the huge, gleaming white dagoba of the Kiri Vehera Temple . Muslims believe that Moses taught here and pray at the Khizr Takya mosque. The series of temples and dagobas are linked by manicured paths where holy animals wander freely. What fascinates at Kataragama is not so much the architecture as the rhythm of pilgrim life, and the colourful, elaborate religious ceremonies and rituals taking place.

Like Colombo, Galle was a thriving port long before colonial times; on the southwest of the country, it attracted Arabs, Persians, Romans and Greeks on their way across the Indian Ocean. In 1505 the Portuguese attacked and settled the town, 135 years later conceding it to the Dutch, who built the famous fort. In 1796 the British took over and used the fort as their headquarters. Today, Galle Fort is the old part of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best preserved colonial sea fortress in Asia. It is a cosy little town in its own right with narrow streets, churches, cloistered courtyards and shuttered mansions standing testament to their colonial past. Galle Fort has recently received a lot of investment from expatriates living in South East Asia and is now bristling with boutique hotels, art galleries, tiny shops, cafes and restaurants. There are several museums as well as the Dutch Reformed Church and the lively Arab Quarter. A sunset walk around the ramparts is a treat. Galle is the gateway to the southern beaches the best of which are Unawatuna & Mirissa.

Yala (or Ruhunu) National Park (1,570-square-kilometres) is mostly open parkland, making the wildlife easier to see, particularly in the December-March dry season. The landscape is varied, with rock outcrops, scrub jungle, lagoons, lakes, rivers and even beaches, and it has a rainy season from April to June (the park closes in September). Yala West is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where it is relatively easy to see a leopard, either strolling beside the track or, with luck, draped elegantly in a tree. There are estimated to be around 35 leopards and 400 wild elephants, as well as wild buffalo, musk deer, mongoose, pangolins, black bears, macaques, jackals and numerous species of bird.

The cool, misty hill station of Nuwara Eliya (pronounced Noor elia) was first established as a summer retreat by the Governor of Ceylon, Sir Edward Barnes, in 1828. Twenty years later it was developed into a resort by Samuel Baker to provide 19th-century colonials with respite from the lowland heat. Even today it has an air of wistful, suburban nostalgia, with mock-Tudor houses set in carefully-tended gardens, a red English post box and pink-painted post office, winding roads, trout streams, a golf course, race-course and botanical gardens. The clubs and hotels - social centres of the colony - remain, complete with visitors' and game books, Inglenook fireplaces, billiard tables and authentically colonial menus. There is excellent bird-watching in Victoria Park and at the nearby bird sanctuary of Galway's Land, fine walks such as the circuit to Single Tree Hill, and tea estates and factories make fascinating. These days the altitude (1,890 metres) and cool climate make it a major centre for growing vegetables - started by Baker - and flowers for export. The busy town is always popular with local tourists, particularly in the April "season".

There are few more impressive sights in the world than the 370-metre-high rock citadel of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage. Known as the “Lion Rock”, it crouches in red splendour, enveloped by the dense jungle, dominating the surrounding plains. Built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century it took seven years to build and was abandoned after ten years of occupation when the King, defeated by his brother committed su***de. However, in this short time beautiful frescoes were painted – the perfect time to see them is in low light, in the morning or late afternoon – most notably the ‘celestial maidens’ in a cave halfway up, with their expressive faces and exquisite headdresses. Look out for the Mirror Wall, polished to reflective brilliance, and the remains of gardens on the summit. Arthur C Clarke who lived in Sri Lank since 1950 named Sigiriya his 8th Wonder of the World.

The Sri Lanka Wildlife Service set up this much-loved institution halfway between Colombo and Kandy in 1975. It has at least 60 elephants at any one time, several of them mischievous babies, who are fed twice a day and then walked in line down to the Maha Oya river for a two-hour bathe, with much galumphing and spraying of water (to avoid getting soaked, you can watch from the restaurant above). It claims to be the biggest captive herd of elephants in the world and has a successful breeding programme, with over 20 live births to its credit. There are around 20 mahouts and the elephants are left to wander freely across the 10-hectare reserve during the day.
