The south was quieter than I expected. And honestly, I loved it.
No packed streets, no chaos, just people eating, drinking, holidaying and living their lives. Both foreign and local. Exactly how it should be.
I always say I don’t just plan your holiday and recommend where to stay. I recommend where to eat, what to drink, what to order and where to shop. All tried and tested by me and most often with someone who appreciates the finer things in life just as much as I do. 😊
This weekend was a little less café and pub hopping than usual so fewer pictures but every moment was just as good.
Sometimes the best weekends are the ones that don’t need a lot of explaining.

Some places slow you down the moment you arrive. Rukgala Retreat, Digana is one of them.

Nestled on the shores of Victoria Lake, about 45 minutes from Kandy, the road to get there is scenic and quiet and by the time you arrive, the busy world already feels far away.

With just 8 bedrooms, Rukgala is a space built with real care and warmth. The rooms are spacious, airy and beautiful, and the views of the lake, the hills, the Knuckles Mountain Range will stop you mid sentence.
This is not a place that rushes you. You set the pace here.
Start your morning with yoga in the open air teak shala.
Take one of the kayaks out on the lake, paddle board, hike through the Knuckles Mountains with an expert guide, or simply find a quiet corner and read. Cooking demonstrations, massages, guided nature walks and day trips are all there if you want them. And if you don’t nobody will push you.
The food is largely vegetarian and vegan, fresh, local and inspired by Sri Lankan tradition and guests are served something different every single day. Simple, nourishing and absolutely delicious.
The staff are warm, genuine and make you feel completely looked after without overdoing it.
Whether you are a yoga group looking for a retreat space, or simply someone who needs to exhale Rukgala will give you exactly what you need. 🧘‍♀️🇱🇰

Embekke Devalaya
Over 670 years old and still standing. Still breathing. Still beautiful.
Embekke Devalaya, a shrine tucked quietly into the village of Embekke, about 13 kilometres from Kandy town. Built during the reign of King Wickramabahu III in the 14th century, this is not just a place of worship, it is one of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan craftsmanship anywhere in the world.
Over 500 intricate carvings, swans, warriors, dancers and mythical beasts, each one telling a story carved centuries ago. UNESCO has identified the carvings on the wooden pillars here as among the finest woodcarvings found anywhere in the world. And what makes it even more extraordinary? The entire structure is made of wood no metal, not even nails. Even the pins holding the rafters together are carved from wood.
The place is calm and quiet. The archaeology department, with the help of locals, keeps it clean and tidy and you feel that care the moment you walk in.
A random uncle decided to take it upon himself to educate us on the full history of the temple. He was passionate, detailed and not very pleased when I interrupted him with my questions. Safe to say, I did not understand a thing. 😄
Embekke Devalaya is one of those places that does not shout for your attention. It simply waits and rewards those who show up. 🙏🇱🇰

Ishq Villa, Digana.

Six bedrooms. Five floors. A lift. And views that will stop you mid sentence.

This beautiful luxury villa in Digana is perfectly located — if you are a golfer, the Golf Club is right there. If cricket is your thing, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is just around the corner. And if you are neither, the views of Victoria Reservoir alone are reason enough to be here.

The public areas are generous and beautifully done, so many spots to sit, sip something and just be. Speaking of sipping, I had some of the best cocktails here. The kind you think about after you leave. 🍹

Five floors with a lift means every level has something to offer, and the higher you go, the more breathtaking it gets.

This is the kind of place that works for everyone, a family getaway, a group of friends, a golf trip or simply a few days of doing absolutely nothing but enjoying where you are.

My stay at The Glass House, Digana. 🌿
From the welcome to the farewell, it was very Sri Lankan, and I mean that in the best possible way. The owners greeted us like we were friends and the goodbye? It was long. The kind of long goodbye that is Sri Lankan.
Let me talk about the food for a moment. The Sri Lankan lunch was delicious. The breakfast had the yummiest rotti I have had in a long, long time, very Sri Lankan, and if you know, you know. 😁 There was a prawn curry that was something else, a kola kanda we were told we must try, so of course we did and then the chef’s Eggs Benedict, which was obviously not something we could say no to either. Safe to say, we ate well.
The rooms are spacious, well lit, and simple but beautiful. The bathrooms are generous in size and there is public space in the 4 bedroom villa to read, to sit with your tea or coffee, to have a cocktail or a cold beer and just be. The staff are kind and genuinely accommodating. The kind of team that makes you feel looked after without overdoing it.
The winners are Paul and Shirani, Paul, made me some delicious cocktails. You may not be lucky enough to have him as your personal mixologist the way I was, but if you do, consider yourself fortunate. 🍹 Shirani, made my stay extra special in ways I didn’t expect, chatty and friendly and sweet! If you get to meet them both, that is a bonus. But even without them around, this place is too good to leave off your itinerary.
The views of Victoria Reservoir are stunning. The sunrises, you must wake up for them.
Now, as someone who plans tours for a living and who plans family holidays with four kids, I can tell you with complete confidence that this is an ideal place for a family holiday or for a group of friends. Two nights minimum. Play a little golf, visit the local temple, go for a hike or two, or tackle part of the Pekoe Trail. It all sits right at your doorstep.
The Glass House, Digana is not just a stay. It is an experience. And it deserves a place on Sri Lanka itinerary. 🇱🇰

My Colombo.
It isn’t just a city. It is alive, vibrant, diverse, and full of stories waiting to be discovered.
In my opinion, a trip to Sri Lanka is not complete without spending time in Colombo. Not just passing through, actually staying, exploring and soaking it all in.
Eat where the locals eat. Shop where they shop. Walk along Galle Face and feel the sea breeze, then wander into the posh neighbourhoods and then into the streets where real Colombo life happens. Both will surprise you in different ways.
Have a chilled beer watching the sunset. Or pull up a chair at a local kade, order a tea and just talk to the people around you. Some of the best conversations I have had happened exactly like that.
Colombo has a way of getting under your skin. And once it does, you will understand why people who leave always find a way to come back. 🌆🇱🇰

Villa Hundira
The 15-bedroom villa close to the airport is the perfect beginning or end to your Sri Lanka holiday.
It will make you want to stay longer. It’s spacious, beautifully spacious, with rooms and interiors so beautifully done. The food is delicious, and you get to enjoy Western, fusion and Sri Lankan, all of it.
Every day from 4 to 5, they serve tea, a lovely little ritual that gives you a moment to pause, relax and simply enjoy where you are.
The villa is run by Rolf and Indira with their staff, a Swedish-Sri Lankan couple whose warmth fills the entire place. Rolf, a former Swedish motocross champion, brings such an interesting story to the table, and together with Indira, they make you feel like family rather than a guest. Their attention to detail is felt in every little touch, from how the rooms are kept to how thoughtfully the food is prepared.
There’s a library, a small play area for the kids, and so many beautiful spots around the property where you can simply sit and enjoy.
Boat rides, bird watching tours, fishing and cooking demos keep you occupied throughout your stay.
And the sound of the planes, and the sight of them, gently reminds you that you are close to the airport.
To me, this is perfection. I got to experience all of it myself, and I can tell you, it truly is everything it promises to be, and more. 🌿✈️

Last year, I popped by this lovely place called for lunch, and this year, I decided to stay for two nights. It’s not my usual spot 😊 but oh my, it stole my heart! The service was so warm, the food was incredible, and the whole vibe was so calm and peaceful. Dinner was like a little feast—a small buffet with crispy parathas, egg roti, spicy kottu, and rich curries, topped off with fresh curd. Pure bliss! The staff? Absolute gems. They whipped up fresh wood apple juice and even surprised me with wood apple pickle when I casually mentioned I liked it. So sweet and thoughtful! Can’t wait to go back. 😊
