Once covered in thick rainforest with some of the richest bio diverse eco systems. the hills are now home to tea plantation which produce some of the finest tea’s in the world thanks to the manual labour of the hill country.

On the 17th of March a team of independent travel bloggers set off on a three week tour around Sri Lanka as organized by our team at Unique Tours Sri Lanka.

Japan Jabara (Japanese drowner)

Water hyacinth is a free-floating perennial aquatic plant (or hydrophyte) native to tropical and sub-tropical South America. Its origins in Sri Lanka are not certain however this plant received its Sinhalese name Japan Jabara (Japanese Drowner) as they were introduced into a number of Lakes & reservoirs during World War 2 with the intent of drowing Japanese fighter planes by disguising the Waterbodies as plains suitable for landing.

Today this invasive plant covers many of Sri Lanka’s water bodies adding to its beauty whilst affecting the flow of water & nutrients to aquatic life. Despite posing a threat to fresh water marine life. the Locals have found a number of uses for it ranging from bio gas, animal food, medicinal remedies and raw material for some industries.
