DENIYAYA SRILANKA

Deniyaya is a small town in Sri Lanka, located in the Southern Province. This is an ideal countryside town to spend your holiday and get away from your hectic work life.
Deniyaya is located at the border of Sinharaja Forrest Reserve, the most famous rainforest of the country. This is the last viable remnant of Sri Lanka's tropical lowland rainforest. It has many endemic, rare trees and bird species, and a number of rare insects, reptiles and amphibians.
The area consists of series of ridges and valleys.
There are few small and medium scale hotels and restaurants providing accommodation which goes easy on your wallet.
This is a nice area to explore and you can get plenty of fresh breath. Please travel with care, comply with environmental conventions and do not remove any plants or animal products from nature. Please don't try to hunt endangered or threatened species or harvest rare plants for your consumption.

A Sri Lankan displays a star blue sapphire, claimed to be the world's biggest, on his palm in Colombo.
A Sri Lankan gem merchant claiming to have the world's biggest star blue sapphire is ready to sell the precious stone he says is worth at least $300 million.
The Gemological Institute of Colombo certified the gem as weighing 1404.49 carats. The institute's chief gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe said according to the available data, the stone could be the world's biggest blue star sapphire.
The oval-shaped gem is as large as a man's palm.
It was mined from a pit near the central town of Ratnapura that is famous as the "gem city" of Sri Lanka.
The present owner bought the sapphire last September.
The present owner says he bought the sapphire last September from a local gem merchant and got it certified from the GIC. The owner spoke to the AP at his home in the capital Colombo but asked for his identity not to be revealed because he fears that he might be abducted or killed for the stone.
The institute's certification report says the stone is a "large specimen of unheated Blue Star Sapphire with a well-defined Asterism (star effect)."
The owner said the stone was brought to him cut and polished and he knew it was rare because of the size and the star on it.
He said he is willing to sell it, for the right price. The owner previously tagged a price of $100 million. But he said its fame has raised its value and he hopes it would be sold for around $300 million. He's already had offers but hasn't accepted any.
The owner said he named the stone "Star of Adam" because local legend says Sri Lanka's world-famous blue sapphires were formed by the tears of Adam after God expelled him from Paradise.
According to senior gemologists the previous three largest blue sapphires have all been found Sri Lanka. The National Gem and Jewelry Authority said the stone that was previously the largest star blue sapphire weighs 1,395 carats.
Sri Lanka's blue sapphires, also referred to as Ceylon sapphires, are renowned for their unique color, clarity and shimmer in their cornflower blue luster. They have been acknowledged as superior to sapphires sourced from other countries and have been collected by world royalty, wealthy collectors and museums.

Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, 119 km from Colombo. Galle is the administrative capital of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the district capital of Galle District. Galle is the fourth largest city in Sri Lanka after the capital Colombo, Kandy and Jaffna.

Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.

Other prominent landmarks in Galle include the city's natural harbor, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests, one of the main Shiva temples on the island, and Amangalla the historic luxury hotel. On 26 December 2004 the city was devastated by the massive Tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that occurred a thousand miles away, off the coast of Indonesia. Thousands were killed in the city alone. Galle is home to a cricket ground, the Galle International Stadium which is considered to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world.[2] The ground which was severely damaged by the tsunami, was rebuilt and test matches resumed there on December 18, 2007.

Important natural geographical features in Galle include Rumassala in Unawatuna, a large mound-like hill, which forms the eastern protective barrier to the Galle harbor. Local tradition associates this hill with some events of Ramayana, one of the great Hindu epics. The major river in the area is the Gin River (Gin Ganga), which begins from Gongala Kanda and passes villages such as Neluwa, Nagoda, Baddegama, Thelikada and Wakwella, reaches the sea at Ginthota. The river is bridged at Wakwella by the Wakwella Bridge

Hikkaduwa is a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka located in the Southern Province, about 17 km north-west of Galle and 98 km (61 mi) south of Colombo.
The name Hikkaduwa is thought to have been derived from the two words Ship Kaduwa, with Ship being the shorter version of Shilpaya which refers to knowledge in Sinhalese and Kaduwa which means sword. It is believed therefore that the name Hikkaduwa means sword of knowledge.
Hikkaduwa is located on the Coastal or Southern Rail Line . It is also located on the A2 highway, connecting Colombo to Wellawaya, which runs mostly parallel to the shore, through the town.
Hikkaduwa's beach and night life make it a popular tourist destination. It is a well-known international destination for board-surfing. The town was featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain's television show No Reservations.
Hikkaduwa was affected by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake along with nearby villages Telwatta, Paraliya (Queen of the Sea rail disaster), Dodanduwa, Kahawa and Rathgama. In the aftermath of the tsunami, many of the families who had lost everything were given sewing machines as part of the relief operations. As a result, the town has a multitude of tailors who will custom make shirts, pants, and shorts.
