In the dry forests of Sri Lanka, where light filters softly through ancient canopies, the forest reveals its quieter secrets to those who know how to look.
The Sri Lanka Woodshrike (Tephrodornis affinis) is one such encounter—subtle, composed, and easily missed by the untrained eye. Draped in muted greys, it moves with quiet intent through the mid-canopy, foraging with precision, its presence felt more than seen.
At BEAR Expeditions, these are the moments we value most. Not the obvious, but the overlooked. Not the spectacle, but the story.
Guided by science and shaped by years in the field, we interpret these landscapes beyond the surface—revealing the intricate roles species like the woodshrike play in maintaining the balance of these ecosystems.
Because true luxury in exploration is not defined by excess, but by access—access to knowledge, to authenticity, and to the rare privilege of experiencing nature as it truly is.

In the quiet margins of the wild, the Indian chameleon (Chamaeleo zeylanicus) exists as a master of subtlety and precision.
Moving almost imperceptibly through scrub and forest, it shifts color not merely for camouflage, but as a language—expressing mood, temperature, and intent.

With eyes that operate independently and a tongue that strikes with extraordinary speed, it is a highly evolved predator of the micro-world.
An understated icon of South Asia’s biodiversity—fragile, elusive, and increasingly under pressure in a changing landscape.

Meet one of the most endangered and misunderstood animals in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan sloth bear is a medium-sized bear with shaggy black fur, a pale muzzle, and long curved claws adapted for digging. Unlike other bears, it primarily feeds on termites, ants, fruits, and honey, using its highly mobile lips and powerful suction to extract insects from nests.
They favor dry monsoon forests, scrublands, and thorny jungle, often close to rocky outcrops and termite-rich soils.
Ecological Importance

Sloth bears play a vital role in:

Insect population control

Seed dispersal through fruit consumption

Maintaining balance in dry zone forest ecosystems
