Crested Serpent Eagle in Wilpattu National Park

The Crested Serpent Eagle (Spilornis cheela) is one of the most striking raptors found in Wilpattu National Park. Known for its distinctive high-pitched call and bold appearance, this medium-sized eagle features a dark brown body, a broad wingspan, and a prominent black crest with white spots. Its piercing yellow eyes and strong, hooked beak make it an unmistakable sight for birdwatchers.

As its name suggests, the Crested Serpent Eagle primarily feeds on snakes and other reptiles, often seen perched silently on treetops, scanning the forest floor for movement. It is most active during the day and can be spotted gliding gracefully above Wilpattu’s dense forests and open glades. The eagle’s preference for wooded habitats makes Wilpattu—Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park—an ideal home.
