The “Prison Cell” of the Last King of Kandy 👑

Tucked away in Colombo Fort, near Janadhipathi Mawatha, stands a small monument popularly known as the prison cell of Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, the last King of Kandy. Captured by the British in February 1815, the King was brought to Colombo and remained in the Fort until January 1816, when he was deported to Vellore, India.

Interestingly, historical records indicate that he was kept under house arrest in a specially prepared house, rather than confined in this tiny chamber. Today, it remains a fascinating reminder of the final chapter of Sri Lanka’s Kandyan monarchy.

Did you know? 🤔

The Samadhi Buddha Statue at the entrance to the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo is a beautiful landmark in the heart of the city, reflecting the nation’s heritage and identity.

Regarded as Sri Lanka’s largest brass-cast Samadhi statue, it is15 feet tall. The well-known Sculptor Priest, late Ven. Dr. Mapalagama Vipulasara Thero created the moulds in concrete for the brass casting of the statue which was done by Mr. Aloy Jayawardena of Metalrich, Wattala.

Unveiled on 26th May, 1972, it replaced the statue of Queen Victoria that had previously stood at that location in what was then known as the Victoria Park.
