Wildlife officers in Sri Lanka say that homosexual behaviour is observed among wild elephants, with male elephants frequently engaging in same-sex bonding and mounting.
According to experts, such interactions are a natural part of elephant social behaviour and are most commonly seen in areas where large herds gather, such as Minneriya and Kaudulla, particularly during months when food and water are available.
During mating seasons, male elephants also engage in intense fights to attract females, demonstrating both physical strength and social dominance. Observers note that male elephants with physical strength often win over females for mating, leaving out weak bulls who opt for homosexual behaviour.
However, such behaviours, though surprising to humans, are common across many animal species and reflect the complex social structures and emotional lives of elephants.
