Rathna Ella is one of the beautiful hidden natural treasures around Hasalaka, near Mahiyangana, Sri Lanka. The waterfall is fed by the Hasalaka Oya, originating in the Knuckles mountain region, and is generally described as being around 101 metres high. Its water is also important for irrigation and paddy cultivation in the surrounding villages.

🛕 Vatadageya

The Polonnaruwa Vatadage is perhaps the most elegant circular relic shrine in Sri Lanka. Dating to the 12th century, its beautifully carved terraces, moonstones, guardstones and four seated Buddha statues facing the four directions make it an outstanding masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. 🏛️ Hatadageya

Built by King Nissanka Malla (1187–1196 AD), the Hatadage was a sacred relic shrine believed to have housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The name is traditionally connected with “sixty,” with historical accounts saying it was constructed in a remarkably short period. 🛕 Thuparamaya

Thuparamaya is one of the best-preserved image houses in Polonnaruwa. Its massive brick walls, vaulted roof and beautiful decorative details demonstrate the remarkable engineering and artistic skills of the period. Beside the Hatadage stands the enormous Gal Potha (“Stone Book”), a huge stone inscription associated with King Nissanka Malla. About 8 metres long, it contains a lengthy inscription recording royal achievements, policies and declarations. It is one of the most impressive examples of ancient Sri Lankan epigraphic tradition. 🔥 Bushfire Around Maduru Oya Lake, Sri Lanka 🌿🐘

During the dry season, the grasslands around Maduru Oya Lake can become dry and highly vulnerable to fire. Some fires are intentionally started to clear old grass, encourage fresh vegetation for cattle, or for hunting, while others can begin through human carelessness.

Although fire can sometimes be part of the natural cycle of grassland regeneration, uncontrolled burning can seriously affect wildlife, young plants, insects and their habitats. Standing high on Bahirawakanda Mountain, the majestic white Buddha statue of Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya is one of Kandy’s most recognizable landmarks.
