🙏 Gal Vihara – The Timeless Buddhas of Polonnaruwa 🇱🇰
Hidden within the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Gal Vihara, originally known as Uttararama, is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest masterpieces of Buddhist art. The four magnificent Buddha images were carved directly into a single granite rock during the 12th century, during the reign of King Parakramabahu I. Polonnaruwa itself was one of Sri Lanka’s great medieval capitals and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (UNESCO World Heritage Centre)
🧘 The Seated Buddha
The large seated Buddha is shown in deep meditation, representing inner peace, concentration and spiritual awakening. Nearby is another smaller seated Buddha carved within a rock-cut shrine.
🙏 The Standing Buddha
The standing figure has a unique pose, with the arms crossed across the chest. For many years, some scholars believed this figure represented Ananda Thera, the Buddha’s devoted disciple mourning the Buddha’s passing. 🌿 The Reclining Buddha
The magnificent reclining Buddha, approximately 14 metres long, represents the Buddha’s Parinirvana—the final passing beyond the cycle of birth and death.
