The water of the 8m-high Kataboola Ella Fall (Kadiyanlena Ella Falls) cascades down in stages. Although the flow is otherwise languid, during rain the fall is transformed into a rushing body of water, the spray reaching the nearby road.

The full Kataboola cascade consists of 3 levels. The Main Nawalapitiya road crosses this fall on a old arch bridge bisecting the 2nd and 3rd segments.

The first and the top most segment falls in the single stream. The generally accepted height of 8 meters of Kataboola fall is probably the height of the 1st segmemt.


From the pool below the 1st segment, the water falls to the second pool over a wide rock creating the second part. This creates a wide segment of about 6-7 meters.

Then the water flows under the arch bridge and the creates the final segment of the fall underneath the bridge. The complete waterfall with all three segment probably 25 meters in height.

Kataboola Ella Falls (aka Kataboola Estate Falls) is located in Kadiyanlena village, 10 km away from Nawalapitiya. Thus this waterfall is also called Kadiyanlena Falls.

Being on a route less traveled, the environment surrounding the waterfall is still in a unspoiled state.

The closest towns in are Thalawakele and Nawalapitiya, both which will not provide you with decent accommodation.

The word Chariot Path means a lane in which an airplane is taken off. The chronicles mention that this path was initially built to use for the “Dandu Monaraya” of King Rawana; as per the things we got to know from some friends who went in the path earlier. This has led to the name given as Chariot path which is situated closer to Piduruthulagala mountain range in Pussellawa.Chariot Path of King Rawana is a Grass land (Plain) on a top of a mountain range that is surrounded by a pigmy forest, which looks like a pathway. It is a remarkably beautiful place, which has breathtaking views and unspoilt extraordinary environment. This is located near Frotoft Tea Estate in Pussallawa, Sri Lanka.

This is believed to be the route, which King Ravana took Seetha from his capital city Lankapura to Ashoka Vatika by his chariot to show her the beauty of his kingdom. There is a pond called Seetha tear pond, which can be found in the middle of the chariot path and is believed it is formed by her tears. Villagers called this area as Meththappu and Pittani.The ancient information reveals that this is a routine in which King Rawana took his Queen Seetha from the Seetha Kotuwa in Gurulupotha – Hasalaka to Hakgala Botanical Gardens area. The journey had been a romantic tour for which he took the Queen to show the elegance and grace of his kingdom. Due to these tours, even to date this path is an unfertile land which consists of heavy grass.

Pusulpitiya is a village in Kotmale about 3 miles from Morape on the banks of the Kotmale Oya. This area is full of folk legends as this is the area which Prince Dutugemunu spent his childhood when Elara was ruling Anuradhapura.

Kotmale Pusulpitiya Rajamaha Viharaya is historically linked with the Sacred Tooth Relic as it has found refuge here several times during the times of political unrest. It is said that the relic was hidden here during the Maga’s rule (1215-1236) at Polonaruwa. Vijayabahu III (1232-1236) took it back to Dambadeniya where he established the kingdom. The sacred Tooth Relic again found refuge here when the British entered the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815. But the British found it and took it back to the Kandy.

The temple is also said to have one of the four valuable Buddha statues which has been brought to Sri Lanka from India by Arahat Maliyadeva (The last maha arahat to live in Sri Lanka). The other 3 statues are housed at Vattarama, Diddeniya and Madanvela. This seated bronze statue under a Makara Thorana is a beautiful work of art. Apart form this statue, there is nothing of significant historic value in the temple.

According legends a South Indian Brahmin heard about a golden ash pumpkin in the area called Nain Kelina Thota in Kotmale area. He came to Sri Lanka and married a girl from the same area. After awhile they had a son. He scarified the son to take the golden ash pumpkin and while running with it, he kept the pumpkin on a rocky plain to rest. It is said that the rock cracked open and the the golden ash pumpkin was hidden back in the earth. Due to this, the area was known as Pusulpitiya and the Pusulpitiya Rajamaha Viharaya was built on the ground where the Golden Treasure was sunk back to earth.
