Konda Kavum โ€” a taste of old Sri Lanka

Long before supermarkets and factory sweets, there was Konda Kavum. Golden, crisp, and shaped by hand โ€” a sweet born in village kitchens and temple courtyards.

Konda Kavum traces its roots back centuries, to a time when rice was life, coconut was abundance, and sweetness came from nature. Made with rice flour, kithul treacle or jaggery, coconut milk, and a whisper of spice, this sweet carries the wisdom of generations.

The batter is patiently mixed โ€” no rush. Then gently poured into hot coconut oil, where it rises, turns deep golden brown, and forms its signature konda (the little peak). Each piece is hand-turned, watched carefully, and lifted at just the right moment.

This is not fast food.

This is slow tradition.

We prepare Konda Kavum for Avurudu, Vesak, Poson, temple almsgivings, and village celebrations โ€” moments when homes are open, tables are shared, and time feels generous. It is also the sweet offered to guests, wrapped in newspaper, still warm, still fragrant.

Crisp on the outside.

Soft and rich within.

A reminder that our food carries memory, patience, and care.

Sri Lankaโ€™s Blue Lotus: A Flower Woven into Our Soul

Long before it became our national flower, the Blue Lotus (Nymphaea nouchali) was already blooming in the heart of Sri Lankaโ€™s history.

Seen opening gracefully at dawn across village tanks, temple ponds, and ancient reservoirs, the blue lotus has been part of everyday Sri Lankan life for over two millennia. It appears carved into stone at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, painted in temple murals, and offered daily at shrines as a symbol of purity, resilience, and spiritual awakening.

In Buddhist tradition, the blue lotus represents the triumph of the mind over suffering โ€” rising unblemished from muddy waters. It is often associated with serenity, wisdom, and devotion, making it one of the most meaningful flowers offered at temples across the island.

Beyond spirituality, the blue lotus is deeply tied to our ancient hydraulic civilisation. It thrived in the vast man-made tanks built by early Sri Lankan kings, quietly reflecting the brilliance of a civilisation that mastered water management centuries ahead of its time.

Even today, whether in rural wetlands or urban ponds, the blue lotus reminds us of who we are โ€” a nation shaped by nature, faith, and quiet strength.

More than a flower, the Nil Manel is Sri Lanka in bloom.

A timeless symbol of beauty, balance, and belonging.

How fresh fruits line every villageโ€ฆand how easily we take it for granted

Bananas still warm from the sun.
Pineapples stacked with quiet pride.
Wooden tables, no branding โ€” just abundance.

In villages across Sri Lanka, nourishment doesnโ€™t arrive shrink-wrapped. It hangs, ripens, waits patiently.

This isnโ€™t luxury. This is everyday life.

Just land, farmers, and rhythm. Hands that harvest.
Soil that remembers.

Perhaps this is the greatest wealth we forget to notice. May we protect what feeds us so quietly.

Leopards of Sri Lanka | Silent Kings of the Wild

In the golden hours of dawn and dusk, when the jungle breathes softly, the Sri Lankan leopard moves like a whisper. Powerful, patient, unseen.

This island is home to one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, roughly 750 โ€“ 1,000 adult leopards in Sri Lanka today, yet seeing one is always a gift, never a guarantee.

Known locally as Kotiya, the Sri Lankan leopard (เถฏเท’เท€เท’เถบเท) found nowhere else on Earth. From the dense rainforests of Sinharaja to the dry plains of Yala and Wilpattu, it has adapted to forests, scrublands, and rocky outcrops with remarkable intelligence and grace.

Unlike other leopards, ours often rule without rivals. With no lions or tigers to challenge them, Sri Lankan leopards have grown larger, stronger, and more confident. They rest on granite boulders, drape themselves over tree branches, and melt into tall grass with effortless elegance.

But this beauty lives on the edge. Habitat loss, human conflict, and poaching threaten their future. Every leopard sighting is a reminder: coexistence is not a choice, it is a responsibility.

To see a leopard is to witness the soul of Sri Lankaโ€™s wilderness.

Not loud. Not rushed. Wild, ancient, and watching.

Sri Lanka is not just an island. It is a sanctuary.

Weligama Bay โ€” my heaven

A place where the ocean breathes gently, palms whisper ancient secrets, and time slows just enough to remind us what truly matters. Standing here, with the sea at my feet and emerald green behind me, gratitude comes effortlessly.

We are blessed beyond words โ€” not just by the beauty that surrounds us, but by the quiet peace it gives the soul. Some places donโ€™t need promises or explanations. They simply are.

Ranawara โ€“ Sri Lankaโ€™s Golden Flower of Healing

Blooming quietly along village roads, home gardens, and dry zone landscapes, Ranawara (เถปเถฑเท€เถปเท | Cassia auriculata / Senna auriculata) is one of Sri Lankaโ€™s most treasured medicinal flowers.

With its bright yellow petals glowing under the sun, Ranawara has been used for generations in indigenous and Ayurvedic medicine. Long before packaged wellness teas and supplements, our elders turned to this humble flower for everyday health.

How Sri Lankans traditionally use Ranawara: Brewed as a herbal tea to cool the body Used to support kidney and urinary health Known for helping manage blood sugar levels. Valued for improving skin health and digestion Consumed especially during hot seasons for its detoxifying properties

In many homes, dried Ranawara flowers are still stored in glass jars โ€” a reminder that wellness doesnโ€™t always come from pharmacies, but from nature itself.

Ranawara is more than a flower.

Itโ€™s a symbol of Sri Lankaโ€™s deep connection to natural healing, passed down through wisdom, not textbooks.

Letโ€™s celebrate, protect, and pass on this knowledge โ€” because some of our greatest treasures grow quietly by the roadside.
