Sri Lanka has been recognized as the world’s fastest-growing wellness travel destination for 2026, experiencing an impressive 100% increase in global interest. This recognition comes from TimeOut Asia, part of TimeOut Worldwide, based on findings from the State of Retreats 2026 Report by BookRetreats.com.
The report highlights a major shift in travel preferences, with more people choosing wellness-focused experiences over traditional vacations centred on sightseeing and relaxation. Today’s travellers are increasingly seeking opportunities to improve their health, practice mindfulness, and recharge both physically and mentally.
According to a survey of 1,040 travellers in the United States, 49% plan to spend on wellness retreats in 2026, making them a higher priority than spa visits, dietary supplements, and even gym memberships.
This rising demand reflects the rapid growth of the global wellness tourism industry, which the Global Wellness Institute projects will reach US$1.4 trillion by 2027, emphasizing the sector’s expanding influence worldwide.
Sri Lanka secured the top position after recording the strongest year-on-year increase in wellness travel demand on the BookRetreats.com platform.
Experts attribute this growth to the country’s rich heritage of holistic healing. Sri Lanka is internationally renowned for its authentic, doctor-led Ayurvedic treatments, with a tradition spanning more than 2,000 years, offering visitors a unique and deeply rooted wellness experience.
The island’s affordability has also strengthened its appeal, with three- to four-day wellness retreats starting from around US$372.18, making Sri Lanka a competitive and accessible wellness destination on the global stage.
