Borella which was just a village situated along a cart-track from the port of Colombo towards Sinhalese Kingdom of Kotte way back in the 15th century has gradually developed into a modern city.

The Ceylon Electric Tramways were opened for traffic in early 1900s, with the Grandpass Route being the first section to be opened, followed by the Borella (Maradana) Route. Borella was also a terminus of the historical defunct Colombo tramway system, then.
