The Dutch generally built forts along the coastal areas to protect strategic harbours and anchorages from other colonial forces, such as the Portuguese. They did however construct some forts inland, primarily to defend the coastal lowland areas from attacks by the Kingdom of Kandy. Katuwana fort was built approximately 40 km (25 mi) from Matara, in the Kandyan foothills at the northern limits of the Dutch East India Company's territory.[3]
The fort was located on the slope of a hill, with 5 m (16 ft) high ramparts, a single gateway and a 4 m (13 ft) walkway on top. It was diagonal in shape, with two bastions, which each accommodated six cannon,[3] as a result it was often described as a redoubt rather than a fort.
In 1761 during the 'Matara Rebellion' the fort was captured by Kirti Sri Rajasinha's Kandyan forces and partly destroyed.[3] Following the anexure of the Kandy Kingdom by the British in 1815 the fort lost its strategic value and was abandoned.

The is situated on the summit of the famous Gatabaru Kanda or Gatabaru Hill, resting at an elevation of 1500 ft above sea level. The Vihara is situated in a village called Katapola in the region of Galle-Deniyaya main road and within the confines of the Divisional Secretariat of historic Matota.

The mountain is a scenic beautiful mound surrounded by even more beautiful mountains and is flanked by the Rakwana Hills and the virgin Sinharaja Forest, including the Morawak Kanda Mountain and moves in extension to the thicker forest region.

The beauty that surrounds the vihara is extremely charming and soothing to the eye with its natural goods that is distributed around. The lush Greenland is the home for herbal plants and a variety of animal species of Sri Lanka. The apex is a unique creation of mother-nature. A cave of 30feet is home to the old rock temple and is situated in a natural cave. A sleeping statue of Lord Buddha is located inside this cave and alongside the Vihara is the Devale of God Ragguru Bandara and further there lies the Devales of God Vishnu and God Kataragama.

As indicated by Sri Lankan fables the during the era of King Walagamba, who had Anuradhapura as his kingdom and who accomplished significance through the development of Gal Viharaya, was a period that saw the development of a huge number of Buddhist sanctuaries in the nation. God Rajjuru Bandara, believed to dwell in places of worship, commands faith, respectful fear, and infinite respect for the people of Ruhuna, or the country’s southern region. It is well accepted that this temple was built as a tribute to the god Rajjuru Bandara by King Walagamba, the unique creator of Gal Viharaya.

Many love to camp in the cozy tents here surrounding a blazing campfire. It gives a very unique type of camping experience with the sound of the waves crashing against.
The experience at Blue Beach Island includes camping at night and snorkelling at sunrise. It is a recent addition to beach and camping adventures in Sri Lanka. It is an isolated island about 50 m away from the mainland which makes it a more secluded area ideal for camping. Camping here also includes a chance to indulge in some amazing seafood dishes, barbecue and various other delicacies.

lies about 18km away from the Morawaka town and 8 km away from the Pitabeddara Town. The Temple built during the 2nd century BC is on a rocky hill isolated from human habitation is attributed to King Saddhatissa ( 137-119 BC ) of the Anuradhapura Era. The temple has been built by King during the time he ruled the ancient Rohana kingdom during 161 to 137 BC as a prince.

Once you park at the vihara premises you can see the chethiya (stupa) far away on another mountain top. From here it is a climbing down to the foot of the mountain and then climbing the next hill. The steps are made out of granite and has been well laid.

To reach the bottom for the hill you need to climb down over 200 steps. At the bottom is a refreshing water stream. Walking across the stream, the climb begins. The ancient image house is about another 200 steps above this hill. The image house is a cave temple built on a natural rocky platform. A large reclining Buddha statue in this cave shows the Buddha in the state of parinibbana. All the statues in the cave has been covered by a large transparent glass.

One one side of the main image hall is a Devale for the Deitie”Rajjuru Bandara”. He is the most worshipped Deitie in this area. Most of the people who come to this temple from this area seems to be making the journey to visit the Devale rather than the image house.

On one side of the platform is a water drip coming from the rock itself. This is collected in a small tank. The image house in the cave has been recently renovated. But for the entrance the ancient granite door frames has been used.

Above the cave temple roof is a drip ledge to stop water coming in to the temple. But above this man main drip ledge is a larger natural ledge created by two huge boulders sitting on one another.

From the Devale there is another flight of steps going up to the stupa
