🐘 Udawalawe National Park
Established in 1972, Udawalawe National Park spans approximately 30,821 hectares and was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. The park is especially famous for its large population of wild Asian elephants, estimated between 250 and 600, making sightings almost guaranteed. Visitors can also encounter water buffaloes, spotted deer, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, including the red-faced malkoha and grey hornbill.
