Delft island used to be a Portuguese fort, at the time when Portuguese were ruling Sri Lanka and they named it as ‘Illha das Vaca’. (English meaning- Island of cows). Later Dutch used the island and renamed as ‘Delft Island’ after the Delft city in the Netherlands. The island covers an area of 4,700 hectares (Portuguese, Dutch and the British ruled Sri Lanka time to time before we gained the independence in 1948).
