The period from 2025 to 2026 marks a historic milestone for Sri Lanka, as the largest extent of forest cover was successfully declared as forest reserves to be preserved for future generations, showcasing the outstanding success of the newly implemented "Vanaspathi" National Program. As part of this ongoing initiative, which focuses on safeguarding wildlife and elephant habitats while establishing enriched nutritional zones for them, another major phase is scheduled to launch in tandem with World Environment Day.
Under this step, the Koonketiya Forest is also set to be legally protected as a designated reserve. Spanning 30.73 hectares, this forest is situated within the Padaviya Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kebithigollewa Range of the Anuradhapura District.
Characterized as a dry zone evergreen forest, it features a diverse landscape of dense woodlands, scrublands, and grasslands, holding immense ecological value due to its rich plant and animal biodiversity.
Furthermore, the forest serves as a vital catchment area for natural water springs, making the preservation of such ecosystems a crucial part of Sri Lanka's sustainable vision to safeguard the environment and clear air for generations to come.
