This Portuguese monument is in the middle of a roundabout in Bissau. Behind it is the presidential palace. Monuments like this were built by Portuguese as a symbol that a land belonged to them. When Guinea Bissau got independence after years of fighting, they decided to place the lone star ⭐️ on top of it as a sign of victory over the colonizers.

Bingerville became the second capital of the French colony from 1909 until 1934 after Grand Bassam in Present day Cote D'ivoire. In 1905, the French were forced to change their capital because of a fatal sickness called yellow fever. It was named after Louis Gustave Binger, a former French colonial governor. The building in the background was his palace. Many Africans also died from the disease. Till now Africans believe the French brought the disease while the French also think it to be African sickness. Whose right?🤷‍♂️ After the Africans began to play major roles in deciding the future of Cote D'ivoire, they made Abidjan the capital. So this one country has had three capitals. Now the governor's palace is an orphanage for boys.
