Many visitor point out that they never seen something quite like this amazing old town. It’s one of the best preserved Berber towns in Libya and has been placed under UNESCO protection.

Tripoli city was known as Oea in ancient times and was one of the cities along with Sabratha and Leptis Magna that formed the African Tripolis, or Tripolitania.

Leptis Magna (lebda) has deservedly earned a reputation of having the most complete and impressive Roman ruins in the entire North Africa. Leptis Magna was originally a Berber settlement, where after the Phoencians made it into a trading point. From the 6th century BC Leptis Magna was probably subdued by Carthage. It became part of the Roman empire in 111 BC.

Temple of Zeus

Reflecting Cyrene’s importance in the ancient Greek world can be seen by The Temple of Zeus, because it was lager than the Parthenon in Athens. Constructed in the 5th century BC, the sanctuary measured 32m by 70m, and was surrounded by two rows of eight and two rows of 17 columns. The ancient entrance was from the east.
