A new DNA analysis of a 4,400-year-old skeleton from ancient Egypt has found that the individual, an elite official buried during the Old Kingdom, had predominantly Moroccan ancestry, according to a study published this week in Nature.
The genome, sequenced from remarkably well-preserved remains found at the Nuwayrat necropolis in Middle Egypt, revealed that 77.6% of the man’s DNA is linked to Neolithic Moroccan populations, with the remaining portion showing affinities with early Mesopotamian farmers.
