Our landscapes have changed so dramatically this year. We had a cold wet winter (well in Moroccan terms!) which gave us a late winter / spring season of beautiful wildflower meadows and verdant countryside.

We are now in the midst of a hot, dry summer bringing an early harvest of wheat and barley leaving behind stunning golden landscapes.

There is so much beauty in each season and we can’t quite decide which we prefer.

When we take a break from the saddle we like to show you the real Morocco. This week we headed to the weekly market in Essaouira.

Essaouira’s Sunday market is a mixture of a flea market filled with antique and vintage gems and a fresh fruit and veg market where most locals stock up on fresh produce for the week.

The produce is super fresh and seasonal…paradise for those who love to cook!

After rummaging through all the stalls we of course had to stop for coffee and before heading back to our accommodation to follow the kittens lead and have a poolside nap!

One of our favourite things about horse riding in Sidi Kaouki, is seeing the land change throughout the year. Now as we are in the midst of a very hot summer we see the landscape return to a dry desert with magnificent golden tones! This summer we have seen a good harvest here in Sidi Kaouki and it’s been magical to see traditional harvest traditions and techniques in action. Riding past and chatting with the local Amazigh (Berber) farmers you can feel the deep connection that they have with the land and their desire to pass that knowledge to the next generation.

Our horses are very happy too at the sight of all that barley straw!

A little throw back of one of our Kasbah to Coast rides today to mark the release of Odyssey Movie

We were lucky enough to ride our horses into the film set. Our local guide Hassan knew just who to ask to get the gate open for us and allow us once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the set before it was taken down.

This is why we always use local guides…they have the knowledge and contacts to open gates that make our rides truly unique.
