I'm amazigh and I'm proud of it!
โAmazighโ (plural โimazighenโ) what does it mean?
Imazighen are an ethnic group indigenous from North Africa, specifically Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, Mauritania, northern Mali, and northern Niger.
Many imazighen settlements are usually located in rural areas, the countryside, or the mountains. These settlements were formed due to foreign invasions, including the Arab conquests in North Africa.
The majority of amazighs are muslims, but our faith is mixed with traditional practices.
They are mostly sunni muslims.
Among outsiders, the more common name is โberberโ, but this term is reject by imazighen for its negative connotations, because it's related to the word โbarbarianโ.
Historically Amazigh nations have spoken language known as โtamazightโ, which are a branch of the Afroasiatic language family.
Tamazight became an official language in 2011.
We have our own alphabet, flag and our own traditions in everything (weedings, funerals, parties). We have special and rich kitchen, our own clothing and our special way in dressing.
Our flag has 3 colors. Blue means ocean and sky, the green means mountains and green lands, the yellow means desert and the symbol โตฃ with red color in the middle of the flag, means free man.
Imazighen also differ in their appearance.
Many imazighen have european features like red or blonde hair. In addition, some might have blue or green eyes. These features are common due to the europeans who came to North Africa as prisoners or slaves.
Our culture is unique and one of the oldest in the world.
Our history is witness, we are peaceful people we never tried to colonise other countries, we fought strongly for our freedom against many civilisation and countries who were trying to race us.
We are free people.
In the tamazight language the word โamazighโ means โfree peopleโ.
Everyone is welcomed in our lands, everyone who come to us, have the same rights, we are against racism.
In my tour, I will introduce you to our multifaceted culture and traditions.
It will be interesting.
