In the northern and southern limits of the desert there are some tribes engaged in raising sheep: they are the khebbache ait of southern Morocco, the Ouled Zekri arba'as and southern Algeria, the Tunisian South merazigues. En los límites norte y sur del desierto hay algunas tribus que se dedican a la cría de ovejas: son los ait khebbache del sur marroquí, los arba'as y los uled zekri del sur argelino, los merazigues del sur tunecino. El cordero se adapta sin dificultad a las praderas de plantas saladas; también soporta los fríos invernales de la hamada, a condición de contar con buen alimento, pero, en verano, le es preciso beber con regularidad cada dos días. Por lo tanto, sólo puede subsistir si pasa el estío en la proximidad de los pozos, de donde pronto consume todo el pasto, o bien en un constante ir y venir entre el desierto y alguna región húmeda. Se establece así una migración regular, llamada en Argelia achaba, que conduce, por, ejemplo, los rebaños de los arba'as desde la región de los dayas en el sur de Lagwat, donde ivernan, hasta la zona colonizada del Sersu, donde permanecen durante el verano. Otras tribus, que no tienen la posibilidad de pasar la estación seca fuera del desierto, se dedican exclusivamente a la cría del camello; tal es el caso de los regueibat de Argelia (Lguacem) o de Mauritania (Sahel). En invierno no existe el problema del abrevadero, y en verano basta con visitar los pozos de tiempo en tiempo. El rebaño puede entonces dispersarse en busca de lugares reverdecidos y aprovechar al máximo el terreno; los habitantes de las tiendas se ven exentos de la preocupación del agua, que reemplazan con leche de camella. Sistema sencillo, económicamente perfecto, que permite a los nómadas una libertad de movimientos casi total. Durante varios siglos las caravanas de camellos representaron una de las actividades esenciales de los nómadas. Viajeros y mercancías circulaban en grupos, bajo la vigilancia remunerada de las tribus cuyos territorios atravesaban. En la época en que la economía cerrada era lo habitual en Europa, las caravanas introdujeron en Africa del Noroeste una economía de libre competencia. (Robert Capot-Rey)
