SOUKS .. CENTER OF ATTRACTION IN MOROCCO
In Morocco, the souk is much more than a market. People go there without having to buy or sell anything; and to go there they do not mind walking a couple of days. In this country where the population is scattered, going to a souk is, with pilgrimages, the only way to meet people. In the past, the souk was the centre of political and social life par excellence.
Throughout Morocco, the weekly country souks held in the open or under canvas tents attract people from the surrounding villages.
People flock to them in small groups on foot, by mule, riding sidesaddle, by bike or by motorbike.
The souk is a centre of attraction, a meeting place where transactions take place and the necessary supplies are bought. It is in the souk that debts are settled and marriages take place.
The merchants are grouped together according to their speciality. The farmers sell their produce, grown on their small plots of land, fresh from the ground, weighing the fruit and vegetables on small traditional scales. The impromptu cafe-restaurants are welcoming places where people quench their thirst with mint-flavoured green tea while enjoying the delicious aromas of the tagines kept warm on braziers.
