Heartbreaking news — Laura Dahlmeier, Germany’s seven-time World Champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist in biathlon, has tragically passed away in a mountaineering accident on Pakistan’s 6,049-meter Laila Peak.
Laura and her climbing partner, Krauss, were descending the mountain when they were struck by falling rocks triggered during a rope maneuver. Despite rescue efforts by Pakistani authorities, including military helicopters, harsh weather and continuous rockfalls made recovery impossible. Witnesses believe Laura died instantly. In accordance with her written wishes, her family has requested that no recovery mission be attempted — she wanted to rest forever among the mountains she loved.
Born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Laura was celebrated as one of the greatest female biathletes of all time. After retiring in 2019 at just 25, she devoted herself to her passions — mountaineering, ski touring, and sports commentary. Laila Peak, breathtaking yet perilous, has claimed a soul who lived fearlessly and loved the heights deeply. Laura Dahlmeier will forever be remembered — not just as a champion, but as a spirit who found her peace in the mountains.
