Meet the desert lizard that swims. Watch to the end for the twist...

This is a skink, with a specially-adapted snout nose and smooth skin to allow it to seemingly swim through and under the sand in undulating movements. Desert species are astonishing.

Everyone who visits the desert is overwhelmed by its raw beauty and the emotions this stirs. But what is it about the desert that draws people to it in the first place?...

Is it the promise of silence, or of endless horizons? Is it anticipation of the incredible night skies? Or is it the sense of space and remoteness? Or the welcome from its people?

If you're waiting to discover any of this for yourself, our new desert hiking season opens from October.
Whether you want a private, individualised trip, or to join a small group tour, please get in touch with your request.
(Group dates are now online for December through March. Private trips throughout October to April.)

πŸ”ΉοΈ"We were accompanied by four camels who served us well on our 84 mile trek. This was a fantastic experience which I would recommend to anyone wishing for the experience of a lifetime. I would also like to pay tribute to Emily who runs Wild Morocco who met us at the beginning of the trek and provided us with a bespoke trek. She couldn't do enough to ensure we got the experience we craved." MW

πŸ”ΉοΈ"We spent two nights at the Erg Chigaga camp. Beautiful, exotic, great food everything we could want. Bonus was Emily was there when we were there and she is just a great host. Cannot recommend enough." RW

πŸ”ΉοΈ"We had a wonderful trip to Morocco with Wild Morocco. Emily and the team helped us plan our trip advising on where to go and where to stay and really understood all our needs and what we were looking for. We would 100% book another trip." SB

πŸ”ΉοΈ"We spent an unforgettable and perfect time in the desert with our guide and cooks...We can only advise every one to come and discover the desert with Wild Morocco. We will never forget." NC

πŸ”ΉοΈ"We had a wonderful 7 day camel supported trek across Iriqui National Park...I would highly recommend this trip to somebody who is adventurous...I rate this trip highly as good value for a personal and excellent service and you feel safe in a very remote environment." RW

Preparing the dough for sand bread at the campfire. The bread baking has to be one of the standout parts of any desert hike.

It's truly been a season of connections! Both old and new ones. Thank you to ALL of you who have visited us since September and joined the adventure!
From our youngest visitor (3yo) to our oldest (80's), we have been fortunate to enjoy your company doing what we love. I don't have pictures of everyone I've met, but even a fleeting meeting at the edge of the desert has sparked new connections and hopefully return visits to Morocco!
Big thanks to the class of '99 for visiting en masse in October!
Thank you everyone for supporting us and our team.

Hike with us in the only national park in the Moroccan Sahara, the Iriqui National Park. We promise complete immersion in untouched nature, and rare opportunities for wildlife and bird spotting while we're on the trail.

We hike without vehicle support, using a team of camels to carry our supplies and kit. We establish mobile wild camps each day in the seclusion of rolling dune fields, or under the shelter of Tamarisk trees.

Previous guests have described their desert hiking experience as profoundly life-changing, and life-affirming.
We have welcomed solo hikers on challenging expeditions, young families, friends and large group events.

Please get in touch with us to learn more about what desert hiking looks like and how we can tailor your unique trip. Dates are now online for open group hikes through Winter 2026/27.

We recently welcomed a group of 23 adventurous and curious young adults, from , on a two day exploratory hike with three camping nights.
This was far out of their comfort zone but always within safe and controlled distance limits. We were really privileged to meet everyone, including the CEO of Smile for Life and her close team.
I personally felt an instant connection with each member of the group, and I'm sure the rest of our team did too.
Here is Ross getting set up for that morning's hike with Brahim. Ross was determined to remember everyone's name and had an affinity with the support camels.
We hope to see you all again πŸ™πŸΌπŸ©΅ thank you for visiting us! πŸ‘£

As featured in The Telegraph, our 7 nights 'Across Iriqui' hike traverses the only national park in the Moroccan Sahara. The Across Iriqui hike promises complete immersion in untouched nature, and rare opportunities for wildlife spotting while we're on the trail.

We hike without vehicle support, using a team of camels to carry our supplies and kit. We establish mobile wild camps each day in the seclusion of rolling dunes, or under the shelter of Acacia or Tamarisk trees.

Previous guests have described the experience as profoundly life-changing, and emotional.

We have posted group dates for 2026/2027 on our website. Taking account of cooler weather and quieter travel periods, we plan for December through March, with a few select departures from Marrakech -

12 December 2026
9 January 2027
23 January 2027
6 March 2027

Please contact us for further details of the hike or visit our site for more images/options for shorter hikes.

We are very fortunate to enjoy a huge variety of specially adapted desert species in Morocco's Iriqui National Park. In particular our beautiful desert birds.Β

Pictured here, the shy Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse (pic 1 males; pic 2 males with one female).

This species inhabits the stony terrain of the Park. Unlike other sandgrouse, which we also find here in the Park, Lichtenstein's drinks at dusk.

Photography kindly shared with us by Mike Unwin, and by Martin Pitt (of Naturetrek)Β  during our recent introductory wildlife tour of the region, in collaboration with Naturetrek.Β

Please contact us for further details of birdlife and wildlife discovery in the Moroccan Sahara desert.
