Porto Montenegro is a lot of things, but “quiet” isn’t usually one of them. Except for this corner.

While the rest of the world marks May 1st with a quiet day off, Budva turns the streets into a stage of sound, color, and masks.

Here, the holiday is not about slowing down — it’s about stepping into the rhythm of the carnival spirit that defines the town.

The celebration begins with the Gradska Muzika Budva, the town’s oldest musical tradition since 1906. Their melodies set the tone for the season, carrying the bright energy of Budva into days filled with movement and anticipation.

The ‘Abrum’ brings the town to life, led by the Feštađuni, a group formed in 2001 by local enthusiasts from the Old Town who decided to rescue Budva’s authentic carnival spirit from being forgotten. It is a tradition where they roam the streets with wine and food to wake the city up for the festivities, literally. Today, they are the ones making sure the Mediterranean soul of the town stays alive, turning every corner into a stage for local tradition.

Forget the ordinary holiday — in Budva, May is the opening act of something much bigger.
The carnival is not coming. It is already alive.
