Abandoned Plague Fort

Fort Alexander I (near St. Petersburg, built 1838-45) — Originally constructed as a naval fortress to defend the approach to Kronstadt and the Gulf of Finland, this oval-shaped fortress later earned the nickname “Plague Fort” after it housed a covert bacteriological laboratory (1899-1917) where experiments on the plague and other infectious diseases were conducted. Two staff members died of infection inside. The fort was decommissioned, used for military storage, and abandoned by the 1980s.
