🌿🦉 My Top 10 Favorite Birds of Madagascar 🦉 🌿
Madagascar is a wildlife paradise and is home to some of the most unique birds on Earth. Here are 10 of my favorite Madagascar birds that are quite easy to see. This list was hard to make — there are so many amazing ones but I had to pick a few!

1️⃣ Pitta-like Ground-roller – I like pittas and those types of discreet birds. Pitta-like Ground-roller is another level of cool to me and it has such beautiful colors
2️⃣ Velvet Asity – Small round birds are among my favorites of all times. This family overqualifies for that
3️⃣ Common Sunbird Asity – This e-bird description says it all to make me want to always see this bird: Tiny, round, short-tailed yellow-bellied bird. It has all the keywords to get on my list
4️⃣ Crested Coua – This is the coolest of the Couas. He has a funny “personality” to him
5️⃣ Madagascar Partridge – This one is hard to find on a tour but it is a top sighting when you see it. Round bird!
6️⃣ Malagasy Kestrel – Beautiful small kestrel often seen around cities and villages. Often nests on buildings
7️⃣ Long-tailed Ground-roller – Long-tailed, elusive and shy. You have to look for it to see it but it’s worth the effort
8️⃣ White-browed Owl – Once again, I love raptors and especially owls. The only reason why it’s not number one is because it’s hard to rate birds and also because it is hard to beat ground-rollers for popularity in Madagascar if you are a bird
9️⃣ Madagascar Buttonquail – The way these birds search for food is so funny!
🔟 Madagascar Pratincole – Really enjoy watching these guys fly. Majestic

🌍 80% of Madagascar’s birds can’t be found anywhere else on the planet—protecting them means protecting biodiversity itself.

Just came back from Madagascar. I miss it already

I am an amateur birder and I run a tour company called 8th.continent.expeditions based in Madagascar. I want to encourage more amateur birders that it is possible to do some birding on your own without necessarily having to hike far or go on group tours. I had the idea of doing this incidental birding all along my month long trip to demonstrate that spouses and family members of birders can travel along to Madagascar and enjoy the endemic birds without having to wake up super early everyday.

There is another species of Mesites in Madagascar, Brown Mesite, which you can see in the eastern rainforest. Mesites are an endemic family of birds in Madagascar. These two species shown in the photos, Subdesert and White-breasted, are also rare endemics. White-breasted is usually seen in Ankarafantsika but also in Kirindy and Ankarana. Subdesert is restricted in the south western spiny forest around Ifaty.

We believe that more exposure does really help conservation in Madagascar. Talk about it, about who is doing what… just spread the word. Because we believe that big injections of money are not the immediate solution.
We all need to understand it more.
Each country has their own issues and their own approaches that work.
Thank you for anyone who cares and works hard for the conservation of wildlife in Madagascar. 🇲🇬

Centre ValBio is hosting Pre-Congress for the 30th International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress — which Madagascar is hosting this year! 🇲🇬

“By hosting the 2025 Congress in Madagascar, we aim to highlight the critical importance of this unique island nation, which is home to 112 species of lemurs – all of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

“This prestigious event is a cornerstone in the field of primatology, bringing together leading scientists, conservationists, educators, and policymakers from around the globe to discuss and advance primate research and conservation efforts.” — IPS Madagascar 2025

This is such an amazing photo of this Green Bright-eyed Frog (Boophis viridis).

This frog is almost transparent. Apparently, they have the ability to change color, sometimes with reddish spots.

Madagascar has such amazing wildlife. To quote Russell Mittermeier in "The Eighth Continent" by Peter Tyson (published in 2000), "Madagascar is a living laboratory unlike any place on Earth. (...) Without a doubt, the most striking feature of Madagascar's biodiversity is its degree of endemism, both a the species level and the level of genera and families (...) The reptiles and amphibians are both highly diverse and rich in endemics. With the frogs, which are the only amphibians represented on the island, endemism is almost complete. The *178* species of frogs includee only 1 or 2 introduced species, so endemism is 99 percent; the number of endemic genera stands at 16 or 17 out of a total 18."

Some good news from the Great Island, Emirates is now flying to Antananarivo, Madagascar! 🎉🥳

Let’s see how it goes.

Just a reminder, October to December is the best season for wildlife. So if you have no plans for thanksgiving yet you can still consider Madagascar 🇲🇬!

November is the best for birds, reptiles and amphibians.
