The Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is a unique waterbird found across Africa and Madagascar, named for its distinct hammer-shaped head. As the sole member of the Scopidae family, it is a close relative of pelicans and shoebills. Though highly adaptable to various wetlands, habitat destruction and deforestation in Madagascar pose a significant threat to their local populations.
