Chez les Vezo, peuple de pêcheurs du sud-ouest de Madagascar, la pirogue est bien plus qu'un simple moyen de transport : elle fait partie de leur identité. D'ailleurs, le mot Vezo est souvent interprété comme « ceux qui rament ».
Une anecdote raconte qu'un enfant vezo apprend très tôt à lire les courants, le vent et les vagues, parfois avant même de savoir lire ou écrire. Dès son plus jeune âge, il accompagne sa famille en mer et se familiarise avec la pirogue traditionnelle, souvent taillée dans un seul tronc d'arbre et équipée d'un balancier pour assurer sa stabilité.
Pour les Vezo, la mer est une source de vie, mais aussi un espace qui demande respect et humilité. Chaque sortie en pirogue est le fruit d'un savoir transmis de génération en génération, mêlant techniques de navigation, connaissance des saisons et observation de la nature. Cette relation intime avec l'océan fait de la pirogue le symbole de leur mode de vie et de leur remarquable adaptation au littoral Malagasy.......
