🌍 Did You Know?
Yugoslavia was once a country in southeastern Europe made up of six republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia.

🗺️ During the 1990s, Yugoslavia began to break apart. Slovenia and Croatia declared independence in 1991, followed by Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The breakup was accompanied by a series of violent conflicts.

🇷🇸 The remaining Yugoslavia eventually consisted of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro became independent in 2006, bringing the former Yugoslav federation to an end.

🇽🇰 Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Its independence is recognized by many countries, including the United States, but Serbia and several other countries do not recognize it.

📍 Today, the former Yugoslav territory is commonly associated with seven present-day countries/territories:
Slovenia • Croatia • Bosnia and Herzegovina • Serbia • Montenegro • North Macedonia • Kosovo

The Manaki brothers, Yanaki and Milton, were pioneering photographers and filmmakers who shot the first motion picture in the Balkans. In 1905, they brought a film camera to Manastir (now Bitola) and filmed The Weavers, a 60-second documentary featuring their grandmother spinning and weaving. Their work helped lay the foundations of cinema in the Balkan region. 🎞️

Today, their legacy lives on through the Manaki Brothers Film Festival, held every September in Bitola — celebrating cinematography and bringing filmmakers, artists and cinema lovers from around the world to the City of Consuls. 🎬✨
